California Youth Leadership Corps (CYLC) – Long Beach City College

Long Beach City College is a two-year community college that encompasses state of the art, technology-rich learning environments, a broad range of academic and career technical instructional programs, strong community partnerships, and economic and workforce development initiatives that prepare students to be successful in the 21st century.

California Youth Leadership Corps (CYLC) has partnered with Long Beach City College to create a new community change learn-and-earn career pathway in Public and Community Health. The Public and Community Health Career Pathway Program will prepare students to become community organizers, change agents, and leaders in their local communities while gaining skills in community organizing, advocacy, and leadership development.

Latest Information:

CYLC-LBCC participants will take a total of 9 units in credit-bearing courses leading to a Health Education and Promotion Certificate of Achievement.  While they are enrolled in CYLC-Long Beach City College’s Public and Community Health Career Pathway Program’s 9-month learn-and-earn fellowship program, they will be partnered with a community based organization where they will engage in 10 hours of work-based learning. Student fellows will gain hands-on experience in advocacy and community organizing by tackling Public and Community Health-related issues and providing critical services to historically marginalized communities. Participants will also get access to various benefits and support such as career/academic counseling, social-emotional support, and tutoring.

Required courses for The Public and Community Health Career Pathway Program  are:

  • HLED 21 – Introduction to Public Health  (3-units)
  • HLED 200 – Introduction to Community Health Worker (3-units)
  • HLED 22 – Health and Social Justice (3-units)

 

Students who participate have the opportunity to be awarded up to $10,000 in stipend awards and a scholarship of $5,000 while they are enrolled in the CYLC program.

Eligibility: CYLC serves community college students who are primarily between the ages of 18-24; however, students who are over the age of 24 are eligible to apply. Students must be enrolled at Long Beach City College to apply. Students will be selected and onboarded on an ongoing basis.

Application Dates: The application for the Community Leadership Fellowship opens on May 13, 2024, and closes on July 31, 2024.
